2nd Annual Zeny Datiles Memorial Lecture and Luncheon
The 2nd Annual Zeny Datiles Memorial Lecture and Luncheon was held on Monday,
March 23, 2009, at the UNC Clinical Cancer Center. This event, held each
year during National Nutrition Month, offers cancer survivors, family,
and friends educational and practical tips on ways to improve health through
nutrition. This year’s luncheon menu featured recipes made with “super foods” highlighted in the lecture.
Aimee Shea, MPH, RD, CSO, LDN, UNC’s Oncology Outpatient Dietitian, presented Fighting
Cancer With Food, to a packed house. Over 60 cancer survivors, family, and friends gained valuable knowledge about nutrient-rich foods that are proven to help protect against disease and promote good health.
Teaming with Robert Rogers and UNC Hospital Catering, Aimee Shea, Pam Baker, and Tina Shaban created entrees and side dishes that introduced our cancer survivors and family members to different and unique recipes that offer cancer fighting properties.
Dr. Ulda Datiles, Zeny’s Garden founder and supporter, greets program participants at the lecture and luncheon in memory of his wife, Zeny Datiles, a dietitian at UNC for 25 years.

Like a single sunbeam on a warm summer day
There is an exuberance and brilliance in a sunflower…
Sunflowers graced the tables of the luncheon in the form of fresh flowers, seed packets, and napkins. The sunflower is the symbol of Zeny’s Garden Nutrition Library, a program of The Patient and Family Resource Center.
Graduate students from the UNC School of Public Health Nutrition Program and the team from The Patient and Family Resource Center, a member of UNC’s Comprehensive Cancer Support Program, staffed the event.

Donald Rosenstein, MD, joins his team for the lecture.
In January 2009, Dr. Rosenstein joined the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center as the Director of the new Comprehensive Cancer Support Program.
Aimee Shea answered audience questions throughout the program, but individual questions continued long after the lecture had ended.
Robert Tucker, Digital Multimedia Services Manager, recorded the luncheon lecture to offer a future educational opportunity for families unable to attend this event.
