The Lineberger Fellows will conduct cancer-related research until finishing their post-doctoral degrees.

Mullen said his research will focus on how histone genes are regulated to ensure proper chromatin formation in the cell and to gain insight into how cancer cells alter their gene expression through alterations in chromatin.

Dr. William Marzluff is his faculty advisor. Marzluff is executive associate dean for research in the UNC School of Medicine and UNC Lineberger associate director for core facilities.

Cai will research to understand more about how Coronin, an actin- protein affecting cell migration, functions, with hopes of  helping to develop early stage diagnosis markers for certain types of cancer. Dr. James E. Bear, assistant professor of cell and developmental biology, is Cai’s faculty advisor.

Evans Vaughn said that because a fundamental property of cancer cells is that they evade cell death, she will research the mechanisms by which they inhibit the cell death pathway. Her faculty advisor is Dr. Mohanish Deshmukh, associate professor of cell and developmental biology.

The center’s Board of Visitors honors graduate students annually with the highly competitive award, consisting of a $5,000 supplementary stipend. The board began the Lineberger Fellows program in 1988 to promote and encourage graduate students to pursue cancer research.
