The UNC Oncology Patient and Family Resource Center celebrated the 5th anniversary
of the Hats and Hearts Contest with the unveiling of the new program logo and
the announcement of the 2008 winners. With the continued support of the
UNC Hospitals Volunteer Association and many local businesses and community
volunteers, our hat program continues to grow and offer comfortable head coverings
to any UNC patient experiencing hair loss due to cancer treatment…at
no charge.
Seventy-four hats were entered in our 2008 competition. This was the largest number of entries in the history of the contest.

Sandy Burke, a cancer survivor, modeled the winning hats at the 2008 Hats and Hearts Awards ceremony held on Friday, September 26th in the Radiation Oncology waiting area. The Best Overall Design winner was awarded to Jonatha Caspian of Oakton, VA.
Adam and Sandy Lange, owners of Black Mountain Gallery, Chapel Hill, designed this unique handwrought silver necklace for the Overall Best Design Winner.
The Most Popular Vote prize was awarded to Jane Leserman Madison (UNC)
for receiving the most visitor votes for her handpainted silk scarf and hat
creation.
Elena Elms (UNC) took first place honors in The
Elegant Lady category.
Velma Baker’s sassy design with matching scarves claimed first place honors in The
Trendsetter category. Accepting the award in her memory was her son, Mike Baker.
The first place winner in the Cool Hats For Hot Weather category was
Norma Glines (Sanford, NC).
Alexis Westbrook (UNC) designed the first place winner of the Caps For
Chaps category.
UNC Hospitals Catering Department cooked up a magnificent brunch menu for our
contest participants and our cancer patients and families here for treatment
on Friday, September 26th. Dorothy Basden created a cake masterpiece
with the new program logo and name, Heartfelt Hats.
Sandy Burke, 2008 model, Tina Shaban, Manager, Oncology Outreach Services, and Pam Baker, Resource Navigator, celebrate the end of another successful program year.
The hat contest display area also serves as a cancer awareness site as hundreds of employees, patients, families, and visitors pass by our cancer information table daily. Information related to cancer screening, diagnosis, survivorship, and healthy living choices is available.
