Close to 40 participants braved Hurricane Irene to learn how to be effective advocates for lung cancer.

The summit began on Friday evening with a reception and a keynote address titled “Lung Cancer 101” by Dr. Jared Weiss, a medical oncologist at UNC Lineberger.

The Saturday meeting included a welcome by UNC Lineberger director Dr. Shelley Earp, a panel discussion on how to organize fundraising events, and sessions on learning the legislative process, how to be an effective advocate, working with the media, and updates on lung cancer educational materials and projects.

David LeDuc, development director for the National Lung Cancer Partnership, who traveled from the national office in Madison, Wisconsin, to attend, spoke on “Crafting Your Message.”
