Clinical Protocol Symposium Brings Focus to Disparities

On November 11, UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Clinical Protocol Office welcomed more than 230 people to the William and Ida Friday Center in Chapel Hill to a symposium on "Navigating the Cancer Experience: A Forum for Overcoming Disparities."

Dr. Harold Freeman, President and Founder of the Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention and Senior Advisor to the Director of the National Cancer Institute presented the keynote address, "Determinants of Health Disparities: Poverty, Culture and Social Injustice."

Dr. Freeman is the chief architect of the American Cancer Society’s initiative on cancer in the poor and is a leading authority on the interrelationships between race, poverty and cancer. Related to this, the "Harold P. Freeman Award" was established by the American Cancer Society in 1990. This award may be given annually in ACS divisions throughout America to individuals who have made outstanding contributions in the fight against cancer in the poor. Dr. Freeman served as National President of the American Cancer Society from 1988-1989.

Dr. Freeman was joined by a panel of distinguished speakers addressing topics including disparities in the Hispanic-Latino population, racial differences that affect prostate cancer, breast cancer disparities, community organization and collaborations between academia and communities.
