The girls enjoyed a pink carpet entrance, hair styling by DB Sutton & Co. stylists, makeup done by UNC Cheerleaders, craft stations, and an ice cream bar.

This is the third year that the Get Heeled 5K has worked with local businesses to raise money for UNC Lineberger. Register today to run or volunteer at the Get Heeled 5K, scheduled for September 14, 2013!

UNC women’s basketball Coach Sylvia Hatchell’s blueberry patch near Black Mountain, NC is getting ready for the summer picking season.

UNC women’s basketball Coach Sylvia Hatchell’s blueberry patch near Black Mountain, NC is getting ready for the summer picking season. Each year Coach Hatchell donates proceeds from her patch to UNC Lineberger. Pickers send money to Coach Hatchell on an honor system, based on how much they pick from the “pick your own” patch.

On Saturday, April 27, Coach Hatchell welcomed volunteers to prep the patch for the upcoming season. Volunteers worked hard to improve the area with more blueberry bushes.

Blueberries are among the fruits with the highest level of antioxidants, believed to help prevent cancer. These antioxidants are even more powerful than Vitamin C. Not only that, studies suggest that blueberries may improve short-term memory.

Once blueberry season is upon us, folks are invited to pick blueberries to support UNC Lineberger. More information about the picking dates will be posted soon.

Below the Belt raises funds to improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment of gynecologic cancers

Chapel Hill native Eli Tate, a third-year medical student at UNC, and his wife, Erin, wanted to do something after their stepmother, Stella Waugh, was diagnosed in 2010 with endometrial cancer.

Both women were treated at UNC. Ms. Burns passed away in 2012.

“Gynecologic cancers don’t get as much attention as some others,” he explained. “That’s why we started the Below the Belt. We raise funds and awareness to improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment of a group of cancers that affect 80,000 new women each year.”

In the three years since they began the program, they have raised over $50,000 to help fund two clinical trials for endometrial cancer and a summer research fellowship for a medical student. Each year the group has a team that participates in the Tar Heel 10 Miler.

Eli says, “ Stella and Mary Jane between them have over 80 years of social work experience, so they have touched many lives. Lots of people have come forward to support the program. We have inspiring support from the OB/GYN department, Medical Foundation and hospital staff. We enjoy working on it and want to do more so that we can increase our support of research and awareness.”

Wrapped up in pink, celebrating support for all cancer patients

For the third consecutive year, UNC Lineberger and its community partners went all out in October to “Turn the Town Pink!”

This annual month-long celebration of support benefits the UNC Comprehensive Cancer Support Program which offers programs and services dedicated to helping patients and their caregivers with cancer treatment, recovery and survivorship.

It was a mauve-lous month, thanks to the generous spirit of giving from the community partners who took part and from all of those who attended and volunteered at events.

“With more and more advances coming from UNC Lineberger, the thought that someone else’s burden might be just a little bit lighter makes it all worth it,” says Julie Amos, one of the 84 real estate agents who participated in Coldwell Banker's 3rd annual BBQ for Turn the Town Pink on October 18.

Everything from A (Aveda’s Beauty for a Cure) to Z (Zumbathon at Studio East 54) turned it pink this month, and for the first time ever, famous UNC landmarks temporarily turned pink to mark the occasion. Polk Place Pink Out was held on October 10 – the Old Well and Bell Tower turned pink and a fun run was held.

“Supporting UNC Lineberger feels great! From the patients to the researchers to the doctors, we are supporting people we know and care about,” says Turn the Town Pink community partner Gary Grunkleton. “Money and awareness is raised and we have fun doing it. It stems from our passion and duty to give back and help.”

The campus community and students helped us turn UNC’s most famous landmarks pink for one night only!

A special lighting ceremony at the Old Well was held at 7 p.m. and followed by a colorful fun run/walk to the pink-lit Bell Tower and back for cancer awareness. WRAL Anchor Debra Morgan was on hand to help UNC Lineberger light up the night and get the festivities off to a great start!

Fun run participants were pelted with pink and Carolina Blue powder (100% natural, safe and washable) as they ran through Polk Place – making this event worthy of a photo finish back at the Old Well with friends, food and fun – all to raise awareness of the world-class cancer support programs available at UNC.

Chapel Hill, N.C. – Troylene Merrill knows about caregiving — as a giver and as a receiver.

“Caregiving is hard work, but it’s work you never regret,” said Troy, 66, of Bessemer City in Gaston County, who was full-time caregiver for her seriously ill husband, Bill, the last three years of his life.

“You do what you need to do, and no two caregiving experiences are alike. It’s important to be encouraging, but not to smother someone by hovering 24/7. You have to give the patient space.”
