Telemedicine
The University Cancer Research Fund’s investment in Telemedicine has extended the reach of UNC’s experts to 28 sites located in 14 communities across the state.
Our affiliated communities videoconference with a team of UNC experts from a wide variety of specialties who meet and discuss treatment plans for patients during weekly Multidisciplinary Oncology Tumor Boards.
Currently, physicians at Wilson Medical Center, Rex Hospitals, Moses Cone, Marion L. Shepard Cancer Center, and Mission Hospitals participate in Tumor Board conferences as patient cases warrant. The virtual Tumor Boards provide ongoing medical education that is similiar to being in the same room.
Cancer Research conferences between East Carolina University and UNC take place on a bi-monthly basis. The videoconferencing system is also used to facilitate the distribution of Lunch and Learn lectures from Dare County to other communities.
Finally, physician-to-patient consultations are provided through the Telemedicine Network. The Comprehensive Cancer Support Program provides mental health support for cancer patients. In addition, the Clinical Genetics Program offers genetics counseling to patients via Telemedicine.
