Blue Ribbon Partners, a new society to honor groups who have organized community events to support UNC Lineberger, were celebrated at a reception and ceremony at the cancer center on June 26, 2013. These elite fundraising teams have hosted events ̶ ranging from golf tournaments and cocktail receptions to charity runs and BBQ lunches ̶ for three or more years, raising at least $25,000 during that time.

Almost 50 honorees attended the special evening reception and UNC Lineberger lab tour. UNC Lineberger members Adrienne Cox, PhD, and Ben Major, PhD, along with their graduate students, welcomed volunteers into their labs and gave attendees the opportunity to learn about molecular therapeutics and cancer cell biology. Dr. Cox’s lab examines molecular mechanisms of cancer biology, particularly concerning members of the Ras superfamily of proteins. Dr. Major’s lab is interested in understanding how alterations in specific signal transduction pathways contribute to human cancer, and whether exploitation of that understanding can aid in the development of new diagnostics, prognostics and therapeutic intervention strategies.

At the induction ceremony the group was addressed by Shelley Earp, MD, Director of UNC Lineberger; Dr. Don Rosenstein, MD, Director of the Comprehensive Cancer Support Program; Debbie Dibbert, Director of External Affairs; and Jennifer Bowman, Special Events Coordinator.
