Camden Bierbauer

Camden Bierbauer, a rising eighth grader from Roanoke Rapids, NC, was inspired by her grandmother’s fight with breast cancer to find a creative way to help others.

By using her artistic talent, Camden was able to donate $177 to the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Support Program. She raised the money by selling more than 50 breast cancer support rings made of twisted pink wire, pink beads and a hand-painted breast cancer ribbon.

“I was already designing and making rings to earn some extra money,” said Camden. “But when my grandmother was diagnosed with cancer, I decided to make breast cancer rings and donate the money to help others.”

Camden’s grandmother, Susan Lloyd, who lives with them, received treatment at UNC Lineberger. “The staff did so much for her,” said Camden’s mother, Beth Bierbauer. “We wanted to give back to someone who personally helped.” Many of the rings were purchased by co-workers of Beth, who is a teacher in the Roanoke Rapids School District.

Camden presented her donation to the UNC Lineberger Patient and Family Resource Center with her mother and grandmother by her side. The project motivated Camden’s younger sister, Kelsey, to give back in her own way by selling apple pie jars to benefit Animal Crackers Rescue in Rocky Mount.

Although Camden keeps herself busy playing a variety of sports, she hopes to continue to help local organizations once school begins. “It feels good to give back,” Camden said. “You can give back in big ways by doing small things.”
