The UNC School of Medicine’s Division of Hematology/Oncology held its first annual retreat on September 6, 2013 at the Rizzo Center in Chapel Hill to discuss the academic mission and future goals of the division.

Hem Onc Retreat 2013

The more than 50 faculty and fellows that comprise the division attended lectures and workshops showcasing and encouraging research done by division members, highlighting the resources available to division members and the capacity for team science that is a hallmark of research at UNC, and fostering collaborative research.

Dr. Lisa Carey, MD, Chief of the Division of Hematology and Oncology and Physician-in-Chief of the N.C. Cancer Hospital, highlighted the research success of the division. Dr. Carey told attendees that the Division has more than $38 million in grant support and published 355 manuscripts in the last year.

Participants at the meeting attended talks on how to access and best use the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center core facilities, tissue-based and imaging resources for translational research, health services databases such as ICISS and the Survivorship Cohort, and the NC TraCS Institute (home of the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) program).

Workshops at the retreat focused on identifying the division’s goals for the next 5 years in defined topics such as: clinical trials development and accrual, augmenting careers in translational science, health services research, geriatrics and supportive care, and developing collaborative research in benign hematology and immunotherapy.
